Air Traveler Who Rent Cars Beware: Fuel and Fees Add 50% or More To Your Daily Car Rental Rate

6 November 2006

The most economical car rental rate is a weekly rate where you return the car with a full tank of gas to the car rental garage. The next most economical period is a weekend rate where you return your rental car with a full tank of gas.

If you travel on business days and have limited time to fill up a gas tank before returning your rental car you will see your final daily bill often double your quoted rate. Now if that isn’t bad enough, changes in the car manufacturing industry in this country has resulted in the rental car companies keeping rental cars in their fleet longer. The car I am renting this week has 26,000 miles on it. Last week’s car had 14,000 miles driven and it felt and smelled like it had been driven for 94,000 miles.

I comment all the time about good experiences and less than good experiences. Renting cars is increasingly falling in the less than good category.
